Recent experimental data demonstrate that biological synapses incorporate spike timing dynamics not captured in artificial neural network models. This complexity also reflects diversity in neuronal anatomy and membrane responses, and interactions among functional cortical columns. To explore the computational capacity and scalability of realistic cortical modules, we incorporated laboratory-determined synaptic and membrane parameters into a large-scale computer simulation of auditory processing. We distributed more than 100,000 neurons, in minicolumns of 5,000 neurons each, across a parallel cluster of 40 1-GHz processors running custom object-oriented software (NCS). Our preliminary results suggest that computational models of this scope can produce realistic spike encoding of human speech.
